A family photoshoot at the botanic gardens in Melbourne

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne is one of the most iconic and beautiful locations for a family photoshoot in the city. With its lush greenery, colourful flowers, and peaceful atmosphere, the gardens offer the perfect backdrop for capturing those special moments with your loved ones. I recently met Sophie and her family at the gardens to do just that and the results were just magical. If you’re thinking about a capturing memories with your family at the gardens, here’s a few things to help make the most of your shoot.

One consideration we’ll chat about when we begin planning your family photoshoot at the Botanic Gardens is the time of day. Early morning or late afternoon is usually the best time to schedule your shoot, as the light is softer and more flattering during these times. The gardens are open from dawn until dusk, so we have plenty of time to choose the perfect time for your shoot.

When it comes to what to wear, the gardens are the perfect location for a natural, relaxed look. Light, flowing fabrics in pastel hues or earthy tones complement the natural beauty of the gardens, while a well considered palette for the whole family can provide a cohesive look in your photos. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, as we’ll be doing a bit of walking throughout the gardens.

During your shoot, you can expect to have a lot of fun! I’ll prompt and guide you, capturing the natural connection and emotions of your family. Try to forget this is a photoshoot and just take some time to soak up each other’s company – this is when the walls come down and make for truly magical, authentic photographs.

My favourite location for family photoshoots is the tropical glasshouse. This indoor space is home to a wide variety of exotic plants and flowers from around the world, and provides a unique and colourful backdrop for your photos. The glasshouse is also a great option if the weather is not cooperating, as it provides shelter from the rain or extreme heat. It also offers the most stunning soft, diffused light which is the most flattering kind!

Just next to the tropical glasshouse is a stunning pocket of garden with a perfect lawn, gardens with plenty of texture and an outlook towards mature trees beyond the lake. Every perspective is beautiful, no matter which way you look.

Other benefits of this particular spot is that it is easily accessible with paved pathways and only a short walk from Birdwood Avenue. There are also wheelchair accessible toilets and a baby change table. It really is the dream shoot location for young families.
